Buying the best diamond ring can be complicated when you consider the choice out there - the shapes, sizes, qualities and colours of diamonds - but if you abide by these easy guide the process is fairly painless.

The key thing to decide when selecting a diamond ring is how much you are spending. Budget is a really personal area and only you can determine how much you can afford (or how much your lady is worth.). A rule of thumb used to be that a man would spend one month's salary on his girlfriend's engagement ring. Some men still stick to this but only you are in a position decide the price.

Once you have worked out your budget you should consider the style of your engagement ring. As an example, diamond engagement rings normally have 1, 2 or 3 stones whereas eternity rings will have five stones or an entire band of equal-size stones without a beginning or end - signifying eternity.

The great thing about diamond rings is that, within reason, you can get any style of ring to fit your budget simply by altering the size and quality stones. Most people who buy diamonds or diamond jewellery know that the most expensive stones are the pure white stones that sparkle the most and have few, if any, inclusions (visible specs of dust). On larger stones of a carat or more, inclusions are normally visible to the naked eye, but inclusions in smaller stones usually require a jeweller's eyeglass to see them.

The most popular diamonds being sold are round cut stones between 10 and 25 points in size (between 0.10 and 1/4 of a carat) and many buyers don't realise that except for comparing diamonds side by side, the inexperienced viewer would find it very tough to tell a flawless diamond from one of lower quality. But in terms of price paid, a ring made with lower grade stones will cost a fraction of the same ring with immaculate stones.

Diamond is the hardest natural substance known to man and as such diamonds retain their value as the stones will not damage, degrade or tarnish even over a long period of time. You can use this feature of diamonds to your benefit. Jewellers know that a diamond that he (or somebody else) sold 10 years ago will have an equivalent value
in thecurrent market. As such he should offer you a good trade-in value for your diamond jewellery against a new ring. Some clever, and not necessarily wealthy, diamond purchasers upgrade their diamonds every few years and keep the same setting and simply swap their existing diamond or diamonds for larger or better quality ones and pay the difference. Doing this over many years can build you a substantial jewellery collection with impressive, high-quality diamonds.

Clearly the advice given earlier changes. As you get larger diamonds the flaws become more obvious. Therefore as a rule: the bigger the diamond, the higher quality it has to be to retain its effect.
