Credit card debt is something that many people have a tough time climbing out of once they have suffered a huge financial blow. Through the past three years, a recession was a huge financial blow that took a toll on many people’s financial lives, leaving them in debt devastation. This year looks a bit promising for those in debt and many people are feeling the same way as they turn toward credit counseling services to repair their debt. While many people had no choice during the past three years other than to turn to bankruptcy, many people are realizing that there are many more options available to them now
In November 2010, the Federal Reserve gave a report showing that U.S. Consumer debt was over 2.4 trillion. Another report was given showing that it had rose another 20 percent, just before the year ended. This means that many people were affected by the recession and not too many people have safely and successfully found a way out of debt. This year is already proving to be of huge help since it marks the end of the recession and many people are joyously waving farewell as the muster enough strength to pull their financial lives back together or at least attempt to. One way many people are doing that is through credit counseling. Not everyone’s credit is the same. Therefore, each person looking for debt relief will find it through a different process. Unfortunately, many people are learning that some credit counseling agencies are only out for themselves during this time for so many people who want to take care of their debt.
Many credit counseling agencies are responding the mass amounts of people showing up on their door step for debt help by charging high fees and giving lousy advice. It is very hard to know who you can trust when it comes to your debt, so make sure you read the following tips to get an idea of who you should trust and who you should side-step to get to someone else.
1. If you go into a credit counseling agency and are charged more than $50 for service, you are being taken advantage of. Most credit counseling agencies are not even going to charge anything for advice. They do charge something when they begin to help you clean up your debt, but most will not charge for advice. This is an immediate red flag that this place is not going to be good for you or your debt.
2. When you are clearing up your debt with the help of a credit counselor, you will find that your credit counselor is negotiating certain debt with your credit companies. In doing this, if your credit counselor demands that you pay them a certain amount of the money that you have saved; you are being taken advantage of and should refuse their help. If you have already given this credit counselor a payment for services, talk with a supervisor. There is always someone higher on the food chain who will treat your fairly.
3. Any credit counselor who tells you that they can have your debt cleared up in matter of days or even weeks is pulling your chain and should not be taken seriously. Debt relief takes a while,; it is not an overnight process. Anyone telling you that it is, is only wasting your time and should be avoided.
4. The best thing you can do when it comes to debt relief and credit counselors is to search around from company to company. Read all the important FAQ’s and get all the information that you can when it comes to your debt and the credit counseling agency.
