The Spanish islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca - known collectively as the Balearic Islands - have long been popular with European tourists, and one important group have made Mallorca their top choice for years - and early bookings for 2011 suggest the island will stay that way for Irish holidaymakers next summer.

Mallorca appeals because it caters to a wide variety of tastes. Young and old, singles and families can find something to make their holidays special.

The Balearics include Menorca - also called Minorca - and Ibiza, as well as Mallorca. The almost year round sunshine, immaculate beaches and natural beauty constantly beckon. Menorca alone has in excess of 100 beaches, so the only problem is choosing one. No wonder the island is also referred to as 'The Island of Pleasant Breeze.'

Other attractions and activities in Menorca include the following:

* Visits to museums: Two popular museums in Menorca are the Museu Municipal de Ciutadella and Museu de Menorca. The first has an interesting display of artifacts from when the Muslims, Romans and Talayots lived on the island.

* The Los Delfines Aquapark: Children and the young at heart will be especially happy with the offerings here. The 12,500 square meter water park is situated just outside the town of Ciutadella. Some of the features that visitors seem most taken with at Delfines are Adventure River, the Black Hole and Hydrotubes.

* The Xoriguer Gin Distillery: A real gin distillery allows visitors to see how the product is made and even try a sample. Tourists who want to take home samples can buy bottles of the product. The family owned company has been in the gin distillery business for over a century.

* Hiking: When visiting a tropical paradise, it is best to take in all it has in store. The natural beauty and landscape of Menorca makes the island ideal for nature hikes and tours.

* Water Activities: With so many beaches it is no surprise that lots of water sports activities are available to choose from. Some of the most well-known beaches on Menorca are Cala Binibeca, Son Xoriguer and Son Bou. The latter has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful on the island.

Scuba diving and snorkelling offer underwater experiences hard to find anywhere else in the world. Even beginner scuba divers are not excluded, as there are classes just for them in some areas.

After a day or week of sightseeing and other activities, nothing helps a tourist relax more than a spa treatment. Many professional spas on the island help visitors unwind. Some hotels have first class spas and facilities to offer during holidays in Mallorca.

It also has its own unique appeal for visitors, whether from Ireland or other countries. Like Menorca, Mallorca has lots to offer tourists who come to its shores. A rich history has left behind hints of a past that still intrigues visitors. For a relatively small place, it's many villages all have something unique about them.

The island has not lost its appeal since it became popular in the 1950s. The dolphin and sea lion shows are always crowd pleasers. In addition, the beaches, natural habitats and cuisine entice locals and tourists alike. Mallorca even has children's beaches, making it the perfect place for family trips abroad.

The island has lodgings of varying types, ranging from five star hotels, villas and more simple bed and breakfasts. This is especially important to tourists as the euro climbs in value compared to other currencies. With minimal rainfall even in the wettest season, Menorca and Mallorca are the perfect holiday spots for beach lovers and the summer will see many returning to their favourite holiday destination for a week or two.
