Marriage guidance is intended to help you and your husband or wife have the best possible relationship. People hate to admit it but marriage is sometimes difficult. Some marriages are stronger than others. We should look to the more successful relationships to find out what we can learn. Following the examples of happy couples will make our own relationships more satisfying.
Poor communication skills cause more relationship problems than anything else. This is where the most guidance is usually needed. A healthy relationship is built upon good communication. Lack of communication within a marriage will lead to problems along the way even if the partners do not realize it at first. One of the goals of marriage guidance is to help couples improve their communication skills. You must be completely honest with yourself before you can be honest with your spouse. Neither partner can afford to be too prideful or the lack of communication will lead to a breakdown of the marriage.
It is important to say again and emphasize that if you cannot or will not be honest with yourself, you cannot possibly be honest with anyone else. It is just impossible. If you are having any particular feelings, you have to honestly admit to yourself how you are feeling. Once you have admitted your feelings and they are clear in your mind, it will be much easier to discuss those feelings with your spouse. Neither one of you should ever be judgmental. One person cannot ever be fully open with another person if they are afraid of being judged. Both of you must agree that, no matter what is said, neither one will stand in judgment of the other.
Do not hold grudges but always be willing to ask for or give forgiveness. Honesty and forgiveness will keep your marriage healthy.
